UBTH, Benin

UBTH, Benin

One of the best teaching hospitals in the country, though they recently had qualms with accreditation for med student training. However, still remains one of the admired centers for postgraduate training, especially in O&G. Benin City is interesting to live in, and cost of living is modest. Accommodation is superb, in many respects.

Usually intake of new HOs is done around August and April
Interested applicants are expected to pick forms, which cost about N5000, fill, submit and keep ears on the ground for the date of interview.

FMC, Ebutte-Metta

FMC, Ebutte-Metta has no fixed time for intake, per se; but most commonly take around March and August, about 4 -6 HOs each
Located in the heart of Lagos, and with CONMESS assured, it is not a bad idea. However only few HOs are employed in a year

FMC, Keffi

FMC, Keffi, Nassarawa State
This is a growing federal institution, with an advantage of proximity to Abuja (closer to Abuja than Mararaba or even Nyanya. More interesting is the fact that the salaries are fatter than most teaching hospitals you know. And you don’t need to work yourself out. The staff are notably friendly.
Application usually is open around April/May.

General Requirements

Whichever time it is one graduates, there are likely to be at least 2 hospitals calling for applications at that time. Each has its own peculiar prerequisites for application, but most would require

  • The provisional license (not all accept only statement of results)
  • Three letters of recommendation
  • 2 passport photographs
  • Application letter addressed to the Chief Medical Director
  • CV
  • Other credentials attached
  • Application fees, not in all cases

For UNTH

University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital

The application window shifts yearly but often between May and August. (May in 2009, July/August in 2010). Usually preference is given to best 30 (home) graduating doctors, who are exempted from the interview. However the rest slug it out in an interview- written and oral.

The oral interview is especially important, and one may need to know about the Berlin Wall, the Great Wall of China or the name of Obama's dog (for that matter). Otherwise, man-no-man may come handy.

Usually applicants need to pick forms at the CMD's and enclose the usual- passport photographs, credentials and all other requirements as stated.

Other points:

The biggest hospital in the South-east. With 160+ HO staff strength, one is bound to have some little personal time, while being drilled "to move stuff", which may be come of advantage if Primaries is part of the plans to execute during house job. The hospital has since been moved to the new site, Ituku-Ozalla, just outside Enugu. There is a whole new block of bungalows for HO residence. Shuttling from Enugu town might be such a stressful undertaking, and aside from the in-hospital accommodation none exists within the Ituku-Ozala village.

For National Hospital

National Hospital, Abuja
This is famous as the highest paying institution in Nigeria, due to its status as a tertiary hospital directly under The Presidency. However there are strong rumors about the days of such privileges being over. Also it has a very good working environment, and nice accommodation, replete with ACs in rooms, uninterrupted water and power supply, equipped kitchen; though you'll have a roommate.

In 2009/2010, about a hundred House Officers were employed, but there is likely to be a drastic cut subsequently (to about forty-something, I gather).

Call for applications is on all year round, and applications are compiled about two weeks to interview date, and text messages sent to all applicants regarding date and time of interview.

The requirements
  • The provisional license is a prerequisite
  • Three letters of recommendation
  • 2 passport photographs
  • Application letter addressed to the Chief Medical Director, UATH, preferably typed
  • CV
  • Other credentials attached
  • No application fee required
  • Written interview, after which names of successful candidates are shortlisted for oral interview, usually a day or two after
  • Formal dressing is of necessity

Interviews are usually in October/November and it will pay to make out three days for the interview.

Other trickles of intake are known to be possible. However it's best not to hope on such.

Good luck

For UATH (University of Abuja Teaching Hospital)

UATH, Gwagwalada, Abuja (formerly Gwagwalada Specialist Hospital)

A relatively new ( 4 years as a teaching hospital), progressive hospital, with relatively good management, and with notable emphasis on clinical/surgical skill acquisition. Accommodation is provided for about 32 HOs. Others have to rent houses in town, though accommodation in Gwagwalada is inexpensive and comparable to places like Enugu, and unlike main Abuja City. Weather is remarkably hot.

Call for applications for 2010 was made in January, and that has been the trend in recent years, and may not change.
The requirements
  • The provisional license/statement of results from Med School; as such one needs not wait for induction ceremony to apply, though the license must be sited at the interview.
  • Three letters of recommendation
  • 2 passport photographs
  • Application letter addressed to the Chief Medical Director, UATH, preferably typed
  • CV
  • Other credentials attached
  • No application fee required
  • Written interview only, no orals (except if that changes)
  • No strict dressing requirement for the interview
The interview questions were O&G, Ped, Med & Surg. No general knowledge. Mostly Emergencies and common cases, no high-faluting stuff.

There are usually three batches in a year
In 2009- February, March and October/Novemeber
In 2010- March, June & August/September

Other trickles are known to be possible. It's best to keep ears close to the ground.
